PROJECT TIMELINE
HISTORY
Lund University of Technology (LTH) started HAVSRESAN ('THE SEA JOURNEY') in 1990, and the project has since created engagement and highlighted important cultural and environmental issues in the sea and coast.

HAVSRESAN is meant to increase awareness of our seas' local environment and marine cultural history. We use the media to get attention for our activities.
TV and the press usually pay attention to Havsresan in news broadcasts and articles.

Local authorities, companies and the public are invited to participate in the project.
We want to show the public, especially children and young people, the values of the sea and the coast. We want to raise their awareness so they want to know more and make them want to protect our coast and our seas.

In 2023, we conducted extensive transect sea-grass surveys in several locations around Malmö. Multiple survey dives inspected the foundations of wind turbines at the Lilgrund Wind Park, documenting existing biodiversity and invasive species. The last two days were dedicated to surveying post-Napoleonic War wrecks from the beginning of the 19th century in the middle of Öresund.

In 2022, Havsresan investigated and documented post-industrial waste left below the surface by once-flourishing industries. Large amounts of contaminated fibre sludge and barrels of poisonous material were located lying on the bottom and leaking.
SCSC run an information campaign, communicating to the public the location, dangers and source of the pollution, increasing the pressure on our politicians and authorities to allocate the necessary resources to research and understand the problem and find solutions.

We visited Örnsköldsvik, Köpmanholmen and Sundsvall in Västernorrland as well as Stockholm and Jönköping.
In one of the uncovered fibre deposits, we assessed the potential for 1,500 kg of mercury lying in a port where large boats docked.

As part of Havsresan 2021, a project was carried out to pick up ghost nets from Öresund. The project was financed with a LOVA grant from the County Administrative Board of Skåne and was carried out with the help of professional divers. About 500 kg of ghost nets was salvaged and picked up by Fiskereturen in Sotenäs for recycling.

For the first time, under the vignette 'Skånsk submarine Culture & Nature', a large number of representatives of various interests convened to uncover what lies below the sea's surface.
The goal of the trip was to contribute to the documentation of various sites in or connected to the marine environment and, at the same time, inform the general public about all its values. Through active research and broad information, an increased respect and understanding could be achieved for Skane's marine culture and nature.
